She was soaked to the bone. Right now, her top priority was to get back to the hotel and take a hot shower.

If she stayed out in the wind any longer, she’d almost certainly catch a cold.

Danielle gave a quiet, absentminded reply.

She looked up and, all of a sudden, found herself locking eyes with Alexander.

His gaze was impossibly deep and inscrutable—a storm she couldn’t read, couldn’t understand.

But what she could see, unmistakably, was the cold indifference in his eyes.

He probably thought she’d wronged his precious darling again.

Danielle started walking. As she passed Millie, she deliberately slammed her shoulder into her.

Millie hadn’t been expecting it at all; her heart skipped a beat and she stumbled to the side.

Alexander was right next to her. Instinctively, she grabbed his hand. “Alex, help me!”

Alexander’s brow darkened. He caught Millie and pulled her back before she could topple into the fountain.

Even after he steadied her, Millie was still shaken.

Danielle watched the whole scene with a cold, mocking smile.

What a loving couple.

“You—” Millie’s heart was still pounding. “Was that supposed to be payback?”

“Payback?” Danielle’s tone was flat. “You just said you didn’t mean it, that you didn’t see me. So where’s the payback in that?”

Millie faltered.

She was usually sharp-tongued, but somehow she could never win an argument with Danielle.

Gritting her teeth, Millie snapped, “You accused me of something I didn’t do. Clearly you have it in for me, so of course you’d want revenge. I never thought you’d be such a spiteful woman.”

Danielle dipped her head a little, rubbing her temple. Drenched as she was, the gesture made her look surprisingly fragile, almost pitiful.

Her voice was soft, even a little apologetic. “I slipped earlier and hit my head. I’m still a bit dizzy—I honestly didn’t see where I was going. It wasn’t on purpose.”

Millie was at a loss for words.

After all, Danielle had taken quite a fall. It suddenly seemed petty to argue with her any further.

“You—” she started, but trailed off.
