The moment Danielle glimpsed a shadow moving in the darkness, she snapped fully awake.
She blinked her eyes open, scanning the room—nothing. Not a single thing out of place.
The room was dim, the lights still off. Bracing herself on the mattress, Danielle sat up, every nerve on edge. But the room was empty, silent except for her own wary breathing.
Once she’d checked every corner and convinced herself no one had come in, she finally exhaled, tension draining from her body.
It was only then she noticed the cold sweat beading across her forehead.
Ever since she’d fallen into the fountain yesterday, she’d caught a bit of a chill, her whole body aching. Sleep had been nearly impossible in this unfamiliar resort; every small sound set her on edge.
After waking, she gave up on trying to rest. Instead, she lay there, eyes wide open, watching the first threads of dawn creep in.
By morning, Harold was packing up—he was headed back to Eldermere, their paths parting for now.
“Let’s head to the airport together,” he suggested, glancing at Danielle’s wan face. “Rough night? Didn’t sleep well?”
Danielle shook her head. “I’m fine. I’ll catch up on sleep on the plane.”
Harold watched her in silence for a moment before giving her a crooked smile. “This place is kind of spooky, isn’t it?”
“Both nights I stayed here, it was nothing but nightmares. Couldn’t get a decent sleep to save my life.”
Danielle couldn’t help but agree. She’d barely slept herself. As for the shadow she’d seen, she was almost sure it had just been a trick of her tired eyes. After all, the moment she switched on the light, it vanished.
She gathered up her research data and sent everything back to the Blackwood Research Institute.
The first thing Danielle did when she got home was pick up Niki.
The little girl was glued to her the moment she walked through the door, two days’ absence making her cling even tighter. “Mommy, I missed you.”
