“Dani.” The old woman pressed a hand to her chest, her tone slow and heavy. “Why didn’t you tell your grandmother about this?”

“You and he are already divorced. Was he cruel to you? Did he hurt you?”

Helen’s voice sounded especially frail, her breath coming in shallow gasps, but her eyes remained fixed on Danielle, demanding an answer.

Seeing her grandmother so distressed, Danielle tried to reassure her. “Grandma, the divorce was mutual. We both agreed.”

“You’re not feeling well. Let me help you back downstairs to rest.”

Helen’s face was ghostly pale. “But he told me earlier he didn’t want a divorce!”

Danielle hesitated. She knew her grandmother would always take her side. Alexander’s sweet words only ever fooled Helen.

“Let me take you back to your room.”

Supporting her grandmother, Danielle called Niki to help and led Helen away to rest.
