Danielle had always worn happiness like a second skin. No one could ever see through her, not even now.

Lately, though, her grandmother had started to sense that something was off between Danielle and Alexander. But never in her wildest dreams did she imagine how well they’d kept their secret—never guessed that the divorce had happened long ago.

“I’m so sorry, sweetheart.” The old woman drew a shaky breath, her chest tight with guilt and regret.

“I had no idea you and Alexander were already divorced… I forced you into so many things you never wanted, all because I hoped to fix things between you two.”

“You should have told me, darling…” Her grandmother cupped Danielle’s face, her eyes soft with pain. “You’ve suffered so much, and I—my foolishness only made it worse.”

She’d never imagined things would spiral this far.

Danielle knew her grandmother’s heart ached for her.

She reassured her, speaking gently, doing her best to ease the old woman’s worry. Marriage, happiness—these were choices each person had to make for themselves. No one else could guarantee another’s joy, nor should they try.

After their talk, Danielle’s phone buzzed. She excused herself to answer.

It was Gian Atwood.

“Something’s happened.”

Danielle’s brow furrowed. “What is it?”

“Millie found evidence—we’re being accused of defaming her for plagiarism. She’s produced a counterclaim, laid out the timeline. Ten years ago, her professor overseas had already developed this system.”

Standing on the balcony above the ballroom, Danielle looked out over the swirling crowd. “I’ve already withdrawn the lawsuit.”

There was no point in dragging things out anymore.

Gian let out a cold laugh, his voice flat. “That doesn’t matter now. Millie’s suing us for slander. She wants to defend her reputation.”

Danielle’s frown deepened as she spotted Millie among the guests below.

Millie looked perfectly at ease, a serene and confident smile on her face. You’d never know she’d been at the center of a storm minutes ago.

Since Alexander had stepped in to support her, Millie seemed untouchable, radiant as ever.

You had to admit—the woman had nerves of steel.

Danielle’s voice was calm. “If she wants a fight, then I’ll see her to the end.”

Soon after Danielle left, a new commotion rippled through the ballroom.

The online rumors had been wild in the days before; now that Millie was cleared of being a homewrecker, business partners wanted to know if the plagiarism accusations held any water.
