A flash of disappointment crossed Brian’s eyes, but he didn’t push it. The fact that Jessica was willing to accept the watch at all was already more than he’d hoped for.
“Alright, but if you need help with anything, just call me,” Brian said as he turned back around and gripped the steering wheel.
“Okay,” Jessica mumbled, fiddling with the watch without really looking at him.
Brian didn’t mind her lukewarm response and kept trying to make conversation. “Isn’t your next prenatal appointment the day after tomorrow? I don’t have anything planned that day, so let me drive you there.”
Of course, that was a lie. With the new product launch, most employees were working overtime, and as CEO, he certainly wasn’t having an easy time either.
But it didn’t matter. Brian could pull a couple of all-nighters to clear his schedule. There was no way he was going to miss another one of Jessica’s appointments.
“I can go by myself,” Jessica said automatically, finally getting the watch clasp to work. She could take care of herself just fine without Brian’s help.
“But I want to be there with you. Can you give me just one chance? Please, take pity on me,” Brian said, throwing his pride completely out the window.
He even blinked at Jessica with a pitiful expression, as if he were some lost puppy. The whole act looked completely wrong on his usually stern face.
Jessica couldn’t stand to watch. She turned her head away and said dismissively, “Whatever you want.” She told herself she wasn’t going soft. She just didn’t want Brian bothering her anymore.
Brian got the answer he wanted, and the fake vulnerability in his eyes instantly disappeared. “Then it’s settled. Thank you, Jessica.”
The barely contained joy in his voice made Jessica feel like she actually mattered to him. Her every move, every glance seemed to control his emotions completely. She had to admit, that kind of power felt pretty good.
However, Jessica knew it was all just in her head. Brian was so caught up in his excitement about going to the prenatal appointment with Jessica that he didn’t notice how her eyes had grown dim.
When they got home, Jessica claimed she was tired and needed to rest. She refused to help Jake with his homework and shot down Brian’s plan to cook dinner at her place so they could eat together.
Brian was obviously disappointed, but he didn’t let it show. He just smiled and said okay, then offered to bring dinner over later so she’d at least eat something.
Jessica knew he wouldn’t give up unless she agreed, so she gave him another halfhearted “Whatever.” With that, she slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
Brian sighed silently and led Jake back home before calling Wesley.
“She’s regressing again? That doesn’t make sense,” Wesley said, clearly puzzled by Jessica’s behavior.
“I’m absolutely certain I didn’t do anything to upset her,” Brian insisted.

Wesley was quiet for a moment before responding. “I’ll find a chance to visit her place soon. Familiar surroundings might help her lower her guard, and maybe I can figure out what’s going on.”
“Thank you,” Brian said, his gratitude completely genuine.
Wesley accepted his thanks without hesitation and later contacted Sana to convince her to help with their plan.
Since Jessica had a prenatal appointment coming up, they decided to wait until after her checkup to avoid any stress that might affect her.
