Lance sat on the couch with his legs crossed. When he looked up and saw Tara walk in, he set his book down. He asked softly, "Have you decided?"

Tara set the milk down as she avoided his burning gaze. She didn't dare meet his eyes.

"How are you planning to handle my resignation?"

She still felt uneasy. More than anything, she didn't want their relationship exposed.

Lance didn't answer her question. "Are you going to stand that far away and talk to me?"

Tara took two steps forward and said, "This… should be close enough."

Lance couldn't help but chuckle. "I'm your boyfriend. Do you have to avoid me like this?"

Tara still didn't move a step closer to him. She stood there a little stiffly, afraid he might pull her into his arms and kiss her.

Lance's smile didn't reach his eyes.

"You don't see me as your boyfriend?"

Tara felt a chill run down her spine from his gaze. But she wanted to escape the plot and get away from him and Soren.

"It's not that. I… I do think of you as my boyfriend. I'm just not used to having one yet."

Lance didn't speak. He just looked at her.

Afraid he would see through her, she could only walk over and sit beside him.

Lance reached out and pulled her into his arms, kissing her hair with a gentle reverence that spoke volumes of his affection. He gently assured her. "I'll take care of your resignation."

Tara, however, was more concerned with the specifics. "I meant—"

"You don't want anyone to know about us," he said, finishing for her.

Despite her fear of upsetting him again, Tara nodded.

Shawn's face flickered in her mind, but she dismissed it almost immediately. Shawn wasn't like that—never bold, never cold. The man in her dream had left her unsettled.

Why was she having dreams like this again?

Did she really need romance?

The thought stressed her. She hadn't even untangled the current plot, and her ending still hovered at the edge of collapse.

She didn't have time for love.

As for Lance, if he weren't one of the male leads, maybe they could've had something real. But it wasn't just her role as the villainess. There was a wide, unbridgeable gap between them. His world wasn't one she could belong to—not with her abilities, not in this lifetime.

So she might as well use him to escape, then leave.
