A flicker of calculation crossed Tristan’s eyes before vanishing. “I know what to do.”

“Go,” Jeremiah said, placing full trust in him.

The next morning, Sydney woke before her alarm. Her mind went straight to the component analysis results that Ewan was scheduled to release that day.

Beside her, the man’s breathing was steady and deep. It was clear he had not slept well over the past few days.

She rarely had moments like this. From childhood through adulthood, Julian usually woke earlier than she did.

When he slept, all his sharpness and severity faded away. The longer she looked, the more she thought he seemed almost well-behaved and harmless.

The thought made her smile. If anyone else heard her describe Julian this way, they would probably think she had lost her mind.

“What are you smiling at?”

His lips parted, and his long, narrow eyes opened, catching her unguarded expression.

Sydney was startled. “When did you wake up?”

“Just now.”

“There’s no way,” she said, unconvinced. “You must have been awake for a while.”

Julian did not deny it. “So what were you laughing about?”

“Well…” Sydney thought for a moment, then looked at him and blinked. She chose honesty. “You look really cute when you’re asleep. Totally different from how decisive and intimidating you usually are.”

Julian let out a low chuckle and pinched her cheek. “That’s because you’re the one lying beside me.”

Even now, despite no longer needing to stay alert every second while sleeping, he still could not fully let down his guard.

During the days she had been with him, though, he had finally been able to sleep soundly.

Sydney understood and snuggled closer into his arms.

“I’ll always be by your side,” she said softly, looking up at him “Jules, from now on, you’ll be able to sleep peacefully.”

Julian lowered his head and met her gaze, her eyes filled with affection. His heart trembled, and his breath tightened.

“Alright,” he said, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Should we get up? There should be news from Dr. Vermont soon.”

“Okay.” Sydney nodded, clinging to him like a sloth. “Then carry me to brush my teeth and wash my face.”

Just like when they were kids. Whenever she could not get up, Julian would carry her to the bathroom, set her on the sink, and let her lean against his shoulder to keep sleeping.
