Sydney froze.

Had Marcus not told her to ask Alan herself?

The moment she hung up, he sold her out.

She had been weighing how to bring it up, but now she abandoned that plan and followed the opening he had given her. “Mm. I’ve fully recovered, and it’s still not that close to my due date, so I thought it would be better to go back to the clinic.”

Alan extended his hand. “Give me your wrist.”

“Okay.”

Sydney took his response as a sign he was already halfway convinced. She held out her hand without hesitation.

The past few days of rest at home had not been in vain.

Alan placed two fingers on her pulse. His expression softened slightly, but he did not yield. “Did you discuss this with Julian?”

Her heart settled into an unexpected calm. “I didn’t discuss-”

Alan’s expression sharpened at once, and he cut her off. “You came to me first without discussing it with him? You chose to keep this child. You chose to build a family with him. Then matters like this should be discussed together. You do not make a decision first and inform him afterward.”

Over the years, Alan had become more than a mentor. In many ways, he had filled a father’s role.

Sydney felt a flicker of guilt. She did not try to defend herself. “I’m used to handling everything alone, so I didn’t think it through. But before I came here, I did talk to him.”

Alan asked, “And what did he say?”

“He supports me.” Sydney pressed her lips together and repeated Julian’s words as closely as she could. “He said this is my freedom.”

Both Alan and Eliana looked surprised, then relieved. They had assumed that Sydney and Julian would face a long adjustment, with some compromise and give-and-take.

They had not expected Julian to be this understanding.

Sydney had not visited in a long time, so once she arrived, she stayed by Eliana’s side until evening.
