The next morning, Diana's internal clock woke her to a gray, foggy view outside the window. She washed up, went downstairs, and sat down for breakfast. As always, a maid quietly placed a cup of black coffee in her right hand.

Nina handed her a file, then stepped aside to deliver her briefing. "The project contact at the Brimcrest Charity Foundation has confirmed a meeting for 10:00 a.m. after tomorrow. I've already sent the location to your phone."

"Mm." Diana kept her eyes on the file. "What about the group's side?"

"The hotels under your grandmother's name want to arrange an annual charity gala partnership. I've scheduled that for 10:30 a.m. the following morning."

Diana nodded and tapped the file lightly with one finger before closing it and handing it back to Nina.

Florence emerged from the elevator, walking with her cane. She had gradually stopped relying on the wheelchair.

She reached the dining table and sat down. Noticing that Diana had already set down her utensils, she asked, "Done already?"

"More than enough." Diana smiled ruefully and signaled for Nina to wait in the car. "Mom, I'm heading back to Brimcrest tomorrow. There's a project at the foundation I need to follow up on, and I'll visit Grandma while I'm there."

The two Hutton family elders had always felt more at home at the old estate. Diana had arranged for them to move back some time ago.

"All right." Florence accepted the bowl of cereal a maid offered her. "Your grandmother was talking about you just a couple of days ago. She said you hadn't been back in a long time."

"I'll come back as soon as I'm finished." Diana glanced at the time and rose to her feet. "I'm heading to the office."

"Wait." Florence called after her. "Will the Kingston family come around while you're there?"

"They won't." Diana's voice remained calm. "I've already made things clear with Joseph. They won't come calling again."

Florence looked at her as though she wanted to say more, but in the end, she let it go. "All right. You know what you're doing. Drive safely."
