Jules and Lincoln just stared, dumbstruck.

“Let’s not fight anymore, okay?” Jules said, her voice soft and a bit sheepish.

For once, Lincoln nodded. “Yeah. Otherwise, your son’s going to keep using it against us.”

Jules rolled her eyes, half annoyed, half amused. “Please. My son? Isn’t he already completely under your daughter’s spell?”

Lincoln paused, then noticed the mountain of food stacked on Nathalie’s plate. He couldn’t help but grin. “Those two have always been inseparable. Doesn’t matter what we say.”

Jules huffed. “My golden boy, stolen away. Just great.”

Lincoln gently shot back, “Hey, my daughter’s not exactly a bargain bin find. You’re not losing out here.”

Nathalie’s cheeks burned. She couldn’t take the teasing a second longer. Clutching her bowl, she hurried out. “I need some air. This is too embarrassing.”

Across the table, Morris shot the dads a helpless glance, then took a deep breath. “Dad, Nathalie and I… we’re expecting. So, we’ve decided to be together.”

The words had barely left his mouth when Lincoln nearly choked on his drink. His face turned beet red as he jumped to his feet, eyes blazing. “You little punk! I treated you like my own son, and you sneak around with my daughter behind my back? And you—aren’t you the one who’s running out of time? If you leave us, what’s Nathalie supposed to do? And now she’s pregnant? How do you expect her to go on, raising your child alone?”

Morris looked pale but steady. He faced Lincoln squarely. “Dad, I know it was selfish of me. But Nathalie’s already carrying my child. What’s done is done. If I keep running away from this, if I refuse to be the husband and father she needs, I’ll never forgive myself. I know I don’t have much time left, but I’ll fight for every day I get. I’ll take care of Nathalie and our baby. Please—let us have this chance.”

Lincoln had always liked Morris. He’d even hoped, deep down, their families would become one someday. Now that it was real, though, it was hard to accept. Morris’s health was a ticking bomb, and Lincoln’s biggest fear was what would happen to Nathalie when it finally went off.
