Chapter 396: Time to Run

Selene’s voice was low, such that only Inez could hear her. Her eyes were so much like Killian’s, and with the matching concern overflowing in her, it started to unveil the strings. Her barely concealed concern hit immediately, and Inez felt her breathing turning stagnant. She wanted to tell Selene that everything was alright and there was no need for her to worry about anything, but when she parted her lips, her words changed into something completely different.

"Something is headed over here," Inez stated while eyeing the darkness outside the lodge. She was trying her best to diffuse the strange feelings that had coiled around her heart, but she couldn’t. The feeling continued to tighten, like a snake tightening its grip on her heart. It was suffocating, strange, and a hell of a lot nerve-wracking.

"What do you mean by something is headed over here?"

"Something bad. I don’t know ... it’s just that I can feel it. It’s weird, and I know it." Inez paused. Her eyes were still fixated on the darkness that was getting even more intense with each passing second. She shook her head and then said, "Maybe I am thinking too much, and it’s nothing. Maybe I am going crazy."

Selene whipped her head to the door. There were no judgemental glares as if Inez was acting out to attract her attention or causing trouble for the pack. Instead, the change that happened in Selene was completely different. Her relaxed posture changed from relaxed to wary and defensive. Her shoulders went square, and in an instant, Selene transformed from a damsel in distress to someone who could lead the war as a general. A true protector.

She didn’t question her, nor did she ask what Inez meant by those words. Nor did she dismiss Inez’s feeling as paranoia or ask for evidence that Inez didn’t even have. She simply nodded, accepted the warning that Inez had given to her and started acting according to it.

Seeing this, Inez felt her heart tremble with a hint of warmth swirling.

"Where do you sense it?" Selene asked her. Her voice was sharp with a tactical edge.

Inez pursed her lips and then shook her head. She was annoyed with her own inability to pinpoint the danger that she could feel but couldn’t see. "I don’t know... I...I just have a feeling...right here," she placed her hand against her heart. The heaviness within got even heavier. "Like something is about to happen...something wrong...unfair..."

Her eyes started to wander around as she looked around the lodge with a lost gaze.

Selene was now looking at the surroundings through the glass door even more intensely. Inez was so used to showing a weak side that this was her first time even seeing her act like an alpha. Turned out that she was quite forgetful, as she actually forgot that this woman was an alpha. "Is it coming for the pack?"

"I don’t know... maybe...maybe not... I just wish Tracy were here. She could have told me what was happening. I am just —so confused. I cannot pinpoint this feeling at all."

Maybe she was just feeling a bit nervous or anxious because of what had happened to her at the council’s prison. It could very well be a side effect of the sufferings that she had gone through. A mental breakdown—after all, even if she was a siren who could see through the future and the past, did this even count as seeing someone’s future? It certainly did not. But something within her knew that something was coming. She couldn’t just shake off the feeling.
