White Manor.
Alicia Shelton emerged from the study and saw Jade White sitting in the living room, sipping coffee.
She descended the staircase, her voice cool as she asked, "Who let her in? Are we just letting anyone walk through the door now?"
In the living room, the housekeeper looked at Jade, bewildered. "Miss, I'm not sure who allowed her entry."
The new staff had all been sent over by Yvonne Harrison for Alicia. However, a few of the old household staff remained, and it didn't take a genius to figure out that one of them had let Jade in.
"We're both grandfather's granddaughters," Jade sneered, setting down her coffee cup. "A part of everything in this family should be mine. What gives you the right to be here when I can't?"
Alicia sat down opposite Jade, her gaze icy. "Throw away the cup she used."
The Alicia of today was no longer the pushover she once was.
"Alicia!" Jade's hands clenched into fists, her eyes blazing with fury.
She couldn't stand Alicia's smug, newly-empowered attitude. She had been so meek and timid in the past, and now she was playing the part of the grand lady.
"Do you know why, even though we're both grandfather's granddaughters, I get everything while you're left like a stray dog on the street? It's because your father's origins are a disgrace, and because Grandfather never even acknowledged you." Alicia's eyes locked onto Jade's in a direct challenge.
Jade's knuckles turned white as she fought to control her temper.
She took a deep breath, finally speaking after a long pause. "Alicia, you're just a nobody raised in an orphanage. The only thing you've ever learned is design. Apart from sketching blueprints, you're useless. Do you know how to manage a company? Do you understand the operational model of a major corporation? Do you know how to lead thousands of employees and ensure they have a livelihood?"
It was a blatant provocation.
She was mocking how the old man's meticulous plans had failed to account for human nature. The inheritance was a binding contract: Clayton was tied to the assets. If Alicia couldn't marry Clayton, she would never gain the trust of the company's core members. So who really held the power in the White family now? On the surface, it was Alicia. In reality, it was still Clayton.
Alicia stood up, angered, and looked at Clayton as he descended the stairs. "Clayton, did you let her in?"
He walked down nonchalantly and nodded. "Yes. Is there a problem?"
With a frustrated huff, Alicia turned and walked away. To Jade, it felt like a victory.
Jade smiled at Clayton. "It seems you're the one calling the shots in the White family now, Clayton."
Clayton sat down, his expression indifferent, as if nothing in the world interested him. "You said you knew where to find Susanna. Tell me. If a single detail is wrong, you will never set foot in this house again."
