Alicia looked at them and smiled. So that was their game. They wanted to have their cake and eat it too—Clayton's management skills and the resources she brought with her.

"Alicia, you can't be willful about this. For the sake of the company, for all of us, you have to make certain sacrifices," Chauncey and a few other executives began to guilt-trip her.

"Marriage isn't something you or I can decide. I've been married before, and my husband died. Maybe Clayton thinks I'm a jinx," Alicia said, feigning sadness. "He's a spiritual man. Perhaps he had a reading and was told that marrying me would be fatal."

Chauncey froze, his face a mask of shock. He quickly recovered. "Miss Shelton, you can't listen to such rumors! It's obviously a deliberate attempt to slander your name. How could anyone call you a jinx… What happened to Tyrone was an accident. No one wanted to see that happen."

Alicia propped her chin on her hand and smiled at him. After a brief pause, she spoke again. "Mr. Chauncey, it's good to know you understand. I remember you got divorced a few years ago. Truthfully, it doesn't matter who I marry. You're a company veteran. If we were to marry, we could also lead White Corporation to a better future, don't you think?"

Chauncey was so stunned he looked at Alicia in disbelief. The pen in his hand clattered onto the table.

"Alicia, this is no time for jokes! I'm old enough to be your father…" Chauncey stammered, terrified. He was more afraid that she really was a jinx who would bring about his demise.

Alicia's expression was one of pure innocence. "Age is just a number. It's all for the company. Can't you make a small sacrifice, Mr. Chauncey?" She tossed the question right back at him.

He was completely flustered, unable to utter a single word for a long moment. His neck flushed red with pressure.

"Mr. Chauncey, please give my proposal some thought. I have other matters to attend to, so I'll be going now. I'll wait for your good news," Alicia said, rising from her chair. She smiled at the other executives as she left.

If they wanted to create a problem for her, she would simply make it their problem instead.

She wasn't unwilling to make a sacrifice for the greater good, but she wanted to see if they were willing to do the same.
