Micah remained silent for a long time before finally looking back at Alicia, his eyes filled with regret. "I'm sorry, Annie... I can't tell you who he is."

Alicia had expected as much.

Micah returned the smile. "How have you been?"

Alicia paused to think.

How was she supposed to answer that?

Yet, he was asking anyway, likely just to hear it from her own lips.

"Not great. I've always been short on luck. I was adopted... and then sent back. But later, when I met Tyrone, I finally understood. Maybe I wasn't unlucky after all. Maybe I had just been saving up every drop of good luck in my life so I could meet him," Alicia said with a soft, reminiscent smile before her expression turned bitter. "Unfortunately... happiness is fleeting. Something terrible happened to him. Now, everyone thinks I'm a walking curse. They say I bring ruin to my husbands, my parents... a true omen of bad luck."

Micah stared at her, his expression unreadable. After a long pause, he spoke. "I think you're a lucky charm."

He let the silence stretch between them again before continuing. "The time we spent together at the orphanage was the happiest, most peaceful period of my life. And when you were adopted by that infertile couple, they immediately got pregnant with a child of their own. You've always brought good luck to the people around you."

Alicia was genuinely surprised by his perspective. She had spent her entire life believing she was cursed, but to him, she was a blessing?

"Thank you," she replied softly.

Too much time had passed. They were no longer the two kids who could share their deepest secrets without hesitation.

Micah worked for the Gentleman, which fundamentally made them enemies. They could never be truly honest with each other again.

"I can't tell you who the Gentleman is, but Annie, I swear I will never hurt you," Micah said, his eyes intensely sincere. "I know you probably don't trust me, but—"

"I believe you," Alicia interrupted gently. She believed he wouldn't intentionally harm her, but that didn't mean he wouldn't manipulate other circumstances.
