Clayton didn't bother offering a detailed explanation. "Alicia called this morning. She said she took care of it and that you should rest for a few more days."

Jade was stunned, but didn't press the issue. She made a mental note to interrogate Alicia later.

Clayton ate very little. He set his silverware down, stood up, and walked out.

Jade instantly let out a massive sigh of relief. Sitting across from him was going to give her an ulcer.

With her appetite suddenly returning, she devoured a huge bowl of noodles. That was when she realized her breakfast was completely different from what Clayton had been eating.

The housekeeper beamed as she brought over a plate of fresh fruit. "Jade, Mr. Holloway specifically requested your breakfast menu again today. He really is so thoughtful. He makes sure your meals are different every single day."

Jade sat there in agonizing awkwardness, trying to figure out how to explain to this sweet woman that Clayton genuinely despised her.

Knowing him as well as she did, even if he was curating her meals, it was strictly out of obligation to her late grandfather.

The doorbell rang. Assuming Clayton had forgotten something, Jade hopped up and hurried to open it. Instead, she found Natalia glaring at her from the porch.

Natalia must have slipped onto the property right after Clayton drove through the main gates.

Before Jade could even speak, Natalia lunged forward and slapped her hard across the face.
