Finn reached out and gently smoothed her forehead. “Don’t worry. I have a plan. Want to hear it?”

Evangeline nodded.

Finn leaned close to her ear and whispered a few words.

Evangeline’s eyes lit up.

“That’s a brilliant idea,” she said. Then, as if remembering something, she hesitated.

Finn read her mind. “I’ll figure out what to do about Victor. You just focus on your work.”

She had been cooped up here for days. While she seemed to be in good spirits, her heart had long since flown back to UME. But Victor was like a sword hanging over her head by a single thread, ready to drop at any moment. Evangeline didn’t want him to worry, so she had obediently stayed put.

Finn had noticed this for a while, but it was only after his call with Sybil that he had a sudden realization: he, too, had been confining her in the name of love.

If he loved her, he should set her free. Let her do whatever she wanted, and he would take care of the dangers that lay behind her.

Hearing his words, a flicker of pure joy crossed Evangeline’s face. A moment later, she smiled, wrapped her arms around his waist, and said softly, “Thank you for everything.”

Finn lifted her face and leaned down to give her a gentle kiss on the lips. “It’s my honor.”

“Make Poppy apologize to Evangeline?! Brother, are you kidding me?”

Flora pressed on, “No matter what, you’re Poppy’s fiancé, and she’s pregnant with your child! You should be on her side. If you just stand by her, this whole thing will eventually blow over and be forgotten.”

Her voice trailed off on the last sentence. She knew it wasn’t right, but she couldn’t bear the thought of Poppy apologizing to Evangeline. She felt it was deeply unfair to Poppy.

After her speech, Flora waited for Soren’s reaction. But he didn’t even glance at her. His fingers flew across the keyboard, completely absorbed in his work. He probably hadn’t even heard a word she said.

Flora’s frustration boiled over into anger.

“Soren! I’m trying to have a serious discussion with you. Please pay attention.”

Seeing that Soren couldn’t even be bothered to pretend to listen, she strode forward. When she saw his computer screen, her heart sank.
