Fiona turned back and shot him a glare, prompting Nathan to force a somewhat stiff smile.

"Remington and Joy both need looking after. You've been working hard these past couple of days."

Lizetta hadn't expected him to speak to her in such a pleasant tone, let alone offer words that sounded so much like a concession or a plea for peace.

She was genuinely surprised, but she didn't feel much else.

Even though Nathan had never thought highly of her, he had never done anything crossing the line, either.

He was Remington's father. Despite the severe tension between them, they weren't sworn enemies.

Since Nathan was willing to be civil now, Lizetta didn't demand any apologies or grand gestures. Treating him with the polite distance of a distant relative wasn't too difficult.

After all, with Joy in the picture, there was still a long life ahead, and avoiding him forever was impossible.

So, she replied politely, "It hasn't been hard at all. Joy is very well-behaved, and Remington is considerate enough that he hasn't let me lift a finger."

Fiona, however, gave Nathan another look of disdain.

"What's the point of just saying she's working hard? I haven't seen you do a single practical thing as a grandfather or a father."

Nathan opened his mouth, clearly wanting to defend himself.

But Lizetta had no desire to receive any "practical" rewards or compensations from Nathan.

Besides, his forced, reluctant posture was entirely unappealing.

Lizetta immediately linked her arm through Fiona's, smoothly changing the subject with a bright smile.

"Joy just had his milk, so he's full of energy right now. I told him his great-grandmother was coming to see him, and the little guy seemed to understand. When I left the room, he was staring eagerly at the door."
