"Who is hospitalized here?"

Jerome turned to face Kimberley, his brow furrowed.

If Kimberley wasn't the one sick, why had Lizetta lied to him? His instincts screamed that this room was hiding a secret.

And that it had something to do with him.

"It's a cousin's kid. Her parents are tied up with work right now, so I'm staying with her at the hospital."

Kimberley clenched her fists, trying her hardest to maintain a calm and composed facade.

But Jerome wasn't so easily fooled. He stepped up to the edge of the bed, planting his large hands on the railing and leaning over.

He was reading the patient information card hanging at the foot of the bed.

In that split second, Kimberley felt her heart leap into her throat.

Did he already know?

Just as her mind began spiraling into absolute panic, Jerome suddenly shifted his gaze to her.

"Your cousin's kid is named Candy Evert? Which cousin? I don't recall you having family by that name."

He fired off the questions rapidly, leaving Kimberley scrambling to defend herself.

"She belongs to one of my cousins. We aren't incredibly close or anything, we've just been keeping in touch more over the past couple of years."

"A cousin? And her husband's last name is Evert?"

Jerome took a slow step toward her, and Kimberley instinctively backed away.

"Yes, exactly. Evert. Of course it's Evert. Her name is Candy Evert, after all."

It was painfully obvious to Jerome that she was a nervous wreck. He nodded slowly.

"Then why is your name listed under the guardian section?"

Kimberley Evert. Candy Evert. It sounded an awful lot like her own daughter.

Kimberley waved her hands frantically, forcing out an awkward laugh.
