Wayne leaned against the edge of the sofa, his tiny hands tugging at his older cousin's fingers. "Henry?"
Henry held onto his little cousin's hand, deliberately ignoring his father.
His dad, however, barked at him. "Get over here and take a shower. If Mia comes home tonight and sees you still filthy, she won't even hug you."
Knowing he had a mother who loved cleanliness and a father who was practically a germaphobe, Henry put his tantrum aside for a moment and trudged over, letting his dad help him bathe.
Molly crouched by the sofa, one arm wrapped around her son and the other resting on the armrest. She whispered to her nephew, "Henry, do you want to order some takeout? I can get something for you, and we can sneak outside to eat it before coming back in."
Henry whispered back, "Molly, I don't dare eat takeout. Andre will smack my butt."
Andre glanced at his son, then stepped outside to call his wife. "Hey, Mia, are you on your way back? Do you need me to come pick you up?"
At nine-thirty, while changing his shoes in the entryway, Andre deliberately announced, "I'm heading out to pick up Mia. Who wants to come with me?"
Henry scrambled off the couch and dashed toward the foyer, his little hands grabbing his leather boots to put them on.
"Are you going out in your pajamas?" Andre asked.
Henry met his father's gaze. "Then you have to wait for me, Dad."
He sprinted back to his bedroom and picked out a set of clean clothes. Terrified that his dad would leave without him, he haphazardly pulled the garments on while rushing back down the hall, desperate to go with him.
Holding her boy, Mia immediately felt something was off with how his clothes felt. She unzipped his coat and inspected the layers underneath. His sweater was bunched up, his pajama pants were hiked up to his knees, and the winter coat had just been thrown over the mess. "Who dressed you like this?"
"He dressed himself," Andre replied.
He then recounted how their son had been testing everyone's patience at home and how he was currently on a hunger strike out of pure stubbornness.
Mia's heart melted, and halfway home, she wanted to buy him something to eat so her little sweetie wouldn't go hungry. But Andre wasn't about to indulge him. "Let him starve tonight. He chose not to eat. Who is he trying to punish?"
Henry wrapped his arms around his mother's waist, crawling into her lap looking utterly pathetic.
No matter what Mia said, her husband refused to yield, and Henry had to return home with an empty stomach.
