Andre stared at his son, who had dashed over hugging a massive bottle of soda like it was a mortar shell. "Can you even finish that giant bottle?"

Henry licked his little lips. "If I drink it with Mia, we can finish it."

Mia frowned. "I just opened a bottle for you a second ago, and you didn't even finish it. Why did you grab another one?"

She stood up to go look for the bottle she had just opened for him.

Henry watched his mom walk away, then gripped his dad's index finger with his little hand, shaking it persistently like the tiny menace he was. "Daddy, please open it! I want to drink this one. The color is different."

"This is cola. It's for Mia. You drink juice. Where is the one we just opened for you?"

Mia couldn't find it either.

Unhappy, Henry carried his cola and turned to seek help from his other fathers. He waddled over to Asher. "Godfather, open this for your favorite boy. Daddy only lets Big Mia drink it, he won't let me have any."

Asher was sitting right next to Laurel. Laurel stared at the fearless little boy. "Was that his voice I heard back then?"

She remembered a tiny boy insisting on going down into the prison cell. His soft, sweet, milky voice echoed in that vast, freezing cave where she had been locked in solitary confinement for years. That single sound, sweet and angelic, was permanently burned into her memory.

Henry turned his head and looked at the strange woman speaking. Hmm, he hadn't seen her before.

The little tiger king was afraid of nothing. While his own mother kept her distance from the intimidating woman, Henry walked right up to Laurel, tilting his head to study the stranger. Laurel's cold, clear eyes met the little boy's innocent, wildly curious gaze.

The boy's eyes were bright and crystal clear, looking like polished black obsidian submerged in water.

The tall woman and the tiny boy simply stared at each other. Henry ran the calculations in his head: Mars brought Milka, Conner brought Annie, Teddy brought presents, so the person Asher brought must be... "Are you my godmother too?"
