118 - Ben

I have a low mantra of ‘they’re okay’ running on a loop in the back of my head. The Rift doesn’t want anyone hurt, that much I have figured out. Hopefully, it understands enough to let us get to our mates if they were in real danger.

“Ben, stay close to one of us, man. I’m serious. El will kill all of us if you get hurt without your wolf.” Dev siddles up next to me. Copyright ©️ 2025 Miss L Writes and Ember Mantel Productions.

We grab a branch each. There are a surprising amount to choose from. “You planned this, didn’t you?” I ask the Rift, the same way I would my wolf. A nudge on the arm. Well, at least were getting somewhere with communication. “Any hints on not killing them, but also staying alive?” – Nothing. I roll my eyes.

“Okay, I think we are learning trial and error style. We already know not to touch these f*ckers. Let’s see if we can get one on its side and pin it to the ground somehow.”

We all walk back to the rogue that knocked Jax out.

“I’m not going first!” He holds his hands up. “I already had my turn. I’m good.” It gets a small laugh out of all of us and breaks some of the tension.

I use the branch to prod the wolf, nothing happens to me, but he does move. That’s a good sign. Jason steps up with his own branch and we get the wolf down on it’s side.

“Now what?” He looks at me over the wolf's back. “How are we supposed to cage it in, or whatever?”

“Well, there’s no way we are getting these branches into the ground, we won’t have enough, even if we could secure them.” I talk myself through all the ideas running through my head. Then a tingle runs from my shoulder, down through my arm and the ground shifts. “What the hell was that?!” I shout and all the guys jump. “Did you see that?” I ask, looking at each of them in turn. The expressions I get back tell me all I need to know.

“If you want them to help me, you have to give them something to work with. They understand this magic thing even less than I do. If there is something you want me to do, now would be the time to show me exactly what you want. No games. No guesswork. No crude half-truths. Just show us so we can be useful.” A pressure on my back hopefully means the Rift understands what we need.

Another tingle down my arm, slowly this time. Great, the Rift has a sense of humor and is being sarcastic with me. But I tell the guys to watch anyway. The warmth pools at my fingers and the ground shakes. This time the guys see it too. Then 2 large roots crawl out of the ground and wrap across the wolf, pinning his hips and just below his shoulders to the ground. He’s safe, but imobile.

“That's sweet!” Jax yelps. “So we just have to get them on the ground and you can do that…to all of them? Let’s go!”

A flash and all hell breaks loose. I should have known it wouldn’t be this easy. The slow motion wolves are back to full speed and coming straight for us.

“BEN!” Dev shouts and shoves me out of the way as a wolf flies over us. “F*ck man. That was too close. We need back-up!”

“Can you mindlink anyone? Call out, maybe they can hear you even if you can’t hear the response.” I say sticking to his shoulder as we get up.
