Autumn was beside herself with rage. She slammed off the TV.

“Why did you praise Herman in front of everyone? He’s the reason Julie is gone!” Pregnancy made Autumn’s moods swing like a pendulum; she couldn’t keep her temper in check around Mr. Walker.

He usually let the little stuff slide, but hearing Autumn bring up the old grudge with the Salstroms made his face harden. “Autumn, you’re blowing this out of proportion. I’ve told you a thousand times—Julie’s death had nothing to do with the Salstrom family.”

“How can you say that? Of course it was the Salstroms who killed Julie!” Autumn’s voice shook. “Now you’re always defending them. Are you trying to drive me crazy?”

“If I hadn’t taken their side, you wouldn’t even be here,” Mr. Walker said, voice low. “Autumn, you have to act with a conscience. You think nobody knows what you’ve done? You think I don’t know? I’ve risked everything to protect you. We’re not getting any younger. Every extra day is a gift. Why are you still fixated on the dead? What do you really want?”

He hadn’t spoken to her like that in years.

Autumn froze, eyes darting. Did he really know everything?

She wouldn’t admit it. “I haven’t done anything. I’ve done nothing wrong.”

“Exactly. So don’t do anything now, or ever again. Just lay low and we might have a few peaceful years left. I can still do some good for the people.”
