She didn’t dare pick a fight with him now. Scott was her last shot, her only lifeline. She’d chosen this road, and she was going to see it through, no matter what.

“You’re the one who pushed us away! So what am I supposed to be now, having this baby? Just some woman with a child no one will acknowledge?” Sandy choked out between tears. “I can follow you in the shadows, but the baby can’t. He or she deserves better.”

She was playing her trump card—hoping the thought of their child would soften Scott’s heart.

But his reply crushed her last bit of hope.

“The baby won’t be nameless,” Scott said, almost businesslike. “If you’re willing, Juliana could raise the child. Or my mother. Boy or girl, it’s still the Stranz family’s first grandchild.”

Sandy stared at him, stunned, pain and fury mixing in her chest. “So you want the baby, but you want me gone? I was just supposed to carry a child for your family, like some kind of surrogate? No way. This is my baby. You have no right to take them from me.”

“Sandy, calm down,” Scott said, rubbing his temples. “I’m stuck here too. The company’s already bleeding money because of the divorce mess. If I push for it, I’m the one at fault—Juliana gets most of the assets. If the Stranz family falls apart, one small misstep and we lose everything.”

Not long ago, Scott never would’ve told her all this. Truth was, Herman had told him to test Sandy’s reaction.

And just as he expected, the moment she heard that Juliana would walk away with most of the Goad Group, Sandy’s face soured. “Why does Juliana get everything? That’s not right.”

“Juliana’s made her position clear: either she stays married, or she gets the lion’s share,” Scott said, his tone heavy. “Sandy, you’ll have to hang in there for now. If I lose the family, what do I have left to give you? How could I make you happy?”

Her anger cooled a notch. She couldn’t afford to push too hard.
