A woman stepped inside.

It was Sandy.

She’d come to the office on purpose today—hoping to catch him off guard.

“Scott, are you really leaving me?”

“Sandy, what are you doing here?” he asked, though he already knew the answer. He was just buying time, not really answering her.

Sandy was desperate. Scott had promised to marry her. Now, not only had he broken that promise, there wasn’t even a sliver of hope left.

“I came to ask you just one thing,” Sandy said, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Do you still want me? You’ve been avoiding me. I can guess what you’re thinking, but I just can’t give up. I had to hear it from you. Are we still getting married? Do you still want me and our baby?”

“Sandy...” Scott’s voice was heavy, conflicted. “I’m sorry. I thought I could... but—Sandy, are you really the same person I knew? Who are you—really?”

“Scott, you know exactly who I am.” Sandy stepped in close, taking his hand and gently pressing it to her belly. “I don’t know what gossip you’ve heard, or why you’ve been hiding from me. I just want you to know: if you say the word, the baby and I will walk away. We’ll never be a burden to you.”

Scott’s eyes dropped to her stomach, his hand resting there, feeling the faint stir of life growing inside.

Sandy moved behind him, covering his eyes with her palms, her voice soft and warm by his ear. “Aren’t you happy with me? You believe everyone else, but won’t believe me? I’ve never lied to you. I love you, Scott. I love you—so much.”

Sandy could slip into the role of the devoted lover like it was second nature.
