“Sandy, I just mentioned it in passing,” Sean said, his brow furrowed. “I saw Anastasia at the cemetery today.”

“She showed up?” Instantly, warning bells went off in Sandy’s head—was Anastasia here to make trouble over the inheritance again?

“Yeah. She came with that woman, and Herman was with them too.” Sean started coughing hard, his face turning red as he struggled to catch his breath.

The mention of Anastasia and Herman Salma showing up together made Sandy even more uneasy, but she kept her cool on the surface. “Sean, just sign the papers, okay? We’re Dad’s real kids. We’ll take care of his affairs.”

Sean held the pen, signing as he spoke. “Thanks, Sandy. I’m useless now, can’t do much of anything. Sorry for making you handle all this.”

“Don’t talk like that. We’re siblings—no need to keep score.” Sandy watched him finish signing and finally let herself breathe. “Just get some rest, Sean.”

She took the documents, a flicker of satisfaction in her eyes.

She’d finally gotten what she wanted.

Sean didn’t notice the look on her face. He lay back down, clearly spent. “Don’t overwork yourself, Sandy. Try to get some sleep.”

“Will do.” Sandy switched gears instantly, grabbing the signed papers and heading out.

As soon as she was back in her room, she dialed her lawyer. “The papers are signed. Handle everything first thing tomorrow.”

She was determined to cash out the trust fund as soon as possible—wipe out her debts and use whatever was left to start over.

No sooner had she ended the call than a message popped up from Juliana: “Sandy, are you free tonight? Let me treat you to some late-night snacks.”

Juliana’s situation among the city’s wealthy was shaky. Unable to have kids, she was out of the running for the Stranz family fortune. Everyone knew Scott would eventually move on. People are practical—befriending Juliana no longer had any perks, and the high-society wives had started excluding her from their gatherings.

“Why would I care what people say?” Anastasia’s face was unreadable, her eyes razor-sharp. “Dad’s barely in the ground and you’re already burning through his estate. What’s really going on, Sandy? I’m starting to wonder if Dad’s death was really just an accident.”
