Tavon had finally reached his breaking point. He couldn’t just stand by and let Sandy get away with everything anymore. He was going to report her—she had to face the consequences for what she’d done.
The Mortons were in shambles, and Tavon knew it was his own fault. He’d let Sandy get away with so much, always hoping she’d turn things around. Instead, she’d dragged the whole family down with her.
The second Sandy heard the word “police,” she pulled her arm away from Tavon like she’d touched a hot stove. “No! I’m not going! Dad, please, I don’t want to go to jail. I’m sorry! I swear I’ll never do it again—please!”
Sean faltered, sympathy flickering in his eyes. “Dad, don’t call the cops on her. She just messed up, that’s all. You’re okay, right? Nobody got hurt.”
“I might be okay, but someone died!” Tavon roared, his voice raw. “A life is gone, Sean. I’ve failed as a father. I raised two kids who don’t even know what’s right or wrong. Thank God at least my eldest daughter turned out all right.”
Just hearing Anastasia’s name made Sandy lose it. “This is all your fault! You left everything to Anastasia. If you hadn’t, I wouldn’t have done any of this! You and Mom gave up on me first. When I was drowning in debt, you could’ve helped, but you didn’t. You kept your money for Salma and Anastasia—did you ever care about me?”
“You ungrateful brat,” Tavon snapped, his face a storm. “You’re still trying to twist things around? You really don’t see what you did wrong? You still think you’re blameless?”
“I didn’t do anything wrong!” Sandy shot back, defiant. “You brought me into this world. Isn’t it your job to take care of me? How is that my fault? I did nothing wrong.”
Tavon was shaking with anger, ready to strike, but Sean jumped between them. “Dad, she’s just upset. Don’t stoop to her level. Sandy, apologize to Dad.”
But Sandy just lifted her chin stubbornly. “Everything I did was just to stay alive. What’s wrong with that? If you want to call the police, go ahead. I don’t care anymore. From now on, you’re not my dad.”
“You’re heartless,” Tavon spat, trembling as he tried to grab her and drag her toward the door.
Sandy shoved him, hard. Tavon stumbled back, lost his footing, and started to fall toward the stairs.
Sean lunged and grabbed Tavon, pulling him back just in time, but lost his own balance and went tumbling down the steps.
“Sean!” Tavon shouted, rushing after him.
Sean lay at the bottom, his ankle twisted, head throbbing from the fall. He couldn’t move.
