Lisa leaned in to Carter and whispered, “Seriously? Anastasia just gave a toy? That’s so cheap. Doesn’t she feel embarrassed?”

Carter heard this and couldn’t help comparing his wife to the others.

Everyone knew Mr. Walker’s situation—how extravagant could you really get with a gift?

Carter suddenly thought of something and asked, “So what did you get them?”

Lisa handled the gift shopping.

With a smug smile, Lisa said, “A pair of solid gold lockets. Five ounces of gold, custom made.”

Carter felt a headache coming on. “Why would you give something so expensive?”

Alan was delighted and scooted closer. “Aunt Ana, you look so pretty today.”

“You’re such a sweet-talker, Alan,” Anastasia said, smiling as she took care of him.

The banquet hall was full of people coming and going. Joseph needed to work the room, so he left Alan with Anastasia.

Joseph sat next to Herman and spoke in a low voice. “Did Walker invite you personally?”

Joseph nodded. “Yeah, but I have no clue what he’s after.”
