The moment William got the call, he dropped what he was doing and hurried straight to the department head’s office.

“What’s going on?” His voice was low and commanding, his gaze sweeping over everyone in the room.

Rebecca quickly brought him up to speed. As William listened, his expression grew even darker.

He turned to the department head. “You’d better have an explanation for this. I’ve already shown you the footage—why are you still blaming Isabella?”

Sensing the shift in atmosphere, the department head instantly changed his tune. “No, Dr. Thomson, you’ve got it all wrong. I never blamed Isabella. I just watched the video again, and clearly, Una was at fault.”

His tone was now dripping with flattery, a sharp contrast to his earlier coldness.

Una, growing desperate, grabbed the department head’s sleeve. “But you promised you’d help me!”

He jerked away from her, scowling. “Don’t make things up. When did I ever say I’d help you? You’re just too good at making excuses—I almost believed you. I’m not an idiot, I know exactly who’s right and who’s wrong. Isabella was the one being falsely accused!”

It was obvious he wanted nothing to do with Una’s mess and was scrambling to distance himself.

Una stared at him, stunned by how quickly he’d turned his back on her. She hadn’t expected him to abandon her so fast. That kiss earlier really was a waste.

The next second, she scrambled over to William, her voice soft and pleading. “Dr. Thomson, please, you have to believe me—I’m innocent, I never tried to set up Dr. Cooper…”

But William wasn’t buying her act. Before Una could get any closer, he stepped away, his gaze icy and stern. “The facts are clear now. There’s no point in denying it anymore. I’ll be speaking to the director. Una, you’re fired.”

His tone left no room for negotiation.

The words hit Una like a thunderbolt. This wasn’t how things were supposed to go. She liked Dr. Thomson so much—she’d only tried to frame Isabella to keep her away from him, and now she’d ended up getting herself fired.

Rebecca laughed too. “Well, now that everything’s settled, I’ll get going.”

“Wait, Becky,” William called after her.

Rebecca looked confused. “Is there something else?”

All she could do was force an awkward smile. “Got it, William.”
