"Demonic Cultivators spotted! Surround them!"

The moment the order was given, more than fifty celestial cultivators spread outward like a golden net.

They swept around both flanks and completely encircled Jared's group.

Golden light formed an unbroken ring in the twilight, sealing every route of escape.

Spirit beasts shrieked. Metal armor clashed. Divine sigils hummed with low vibrations. Together, the sounds created a suffocating pressure.

Asher's face turned white as paper.

He tightened his grip on the broken saber, but even the hilt trembled in his hand.

Mara pulled Della behind her and used her own body to block the girl's view.

The other wounded Demonic Cultivators also gripped their weapons, stubborn desperation filling their eyes.

Jared stood at the very front.

His purple gaze swept across the celestial cultivators. He was like a silent reef in the sea, unmoving as waves of golden light surged around him.

Then another group of auras appeared in the distance.

These were messier, accompanied by more chaotic footsteps.

A plume of gray dust announced movement from the east; from the west came pounding steps mixed with the guttural growls of beasts.

A moment later, two more forces entered view.

Thirty to forty human cultivators approached from the east. They wore robes of different colors, carried gleaming artifacts, and wore expressions full of greed and excitement.

Twenty to thirty beast clan cultivators arrived from the west. They were powerfully built. Some had animal ears, some had tails, and others were covered in fur, low growls rumbling in their throats.

Three different forces, nearly one hundred and fifty people in total, now surrounded Jared's group.

Four sides faced one another.

Mounted on spirit beasts, the celestial ranks formed a blazing wall of gold against the fading light.

The human cultivators stood in a line, weapons reflecting cold light.

The beast clan lowered their bodies for a charge, every harsh breath thudding through the still air like a drumbeat.

At the center stood Jared's small party, penned in by three forces with no obvious opening, a lone wolf with every exit blocked.

Asher's lips trembled.

He had lived for centuries and had weathered more than his share of danger, but he had never faced a situation this hopeless.

Nearly one hundred and fifty enemies stood against barely more than a dozen people, most of whom were wounded.

No matter how strong Jared was, even with Gwendolyn and Master Veridian both at Level Eight Golden Immortal, surviving such an encirclement seemed almost impossible.

"Benefactor..." Asher's voice was dry. "Please go. Take your friends and leave. We Demonic Cultivators... maybe this is simply our fate."

Jared did not answer.

Without answering, Jared moved past the others and took the foremost position. Twilight wind whipped his gray robe around his legs.

His right hand slowly rose to the hilt of the Dragonslayer Sword. Purple light flowed over the sheath, ready to erupt at any moment.

His eyes were calm and focused.

No fear. No retreat.

Only a frozen steadiness.

"Master Veridian," Jared said quietly.

"Right here." Master Veridian spat out the dry grass and moved to Jared's left rear, spreading his hands slightly as teal light gathered in his palms.

"Gwendolyn."

She stepped into position behind Jared on the right. Ice-blue frost gathered around her fingertips, freezing tiny crystals out of the surrounding air.

"Keep the wounded covered," Jared ordered quietly. "Anything coming from the front is mine."

Gwendolyn bit her lip, then nodded.

Jared inhaled once, slowly. The calm in his purple eyes sharpened into icy battle intent.
