The elder saw Jared's purple eyes, broke into a grin, and walked over.

"Easy. No need to be nervous." He waved a hand to show he meant no harm.

He stopped several steps away and wiped the blood from his face, revealing a sly smile. "We're not here to kill you."

Jared watched him without trust, but without hostility either. "Why?"

"Why'd we kill the celestials?" The elder grinned, exposing a mouthful of yellowed teeth. "Because the demons put out a bounty too. Kill a celestial cultivator and bring the head to demon territory, and they'll pay twice the celestial rate. You didn't know?"

Jared lifted one brow. "The demons issued a bounty too?"

"Sure did! Word went out last night!" Excitement entered the elder's voice. "A Level Eight Golden Immortal celestial is worth two hundred thousand top-grade crystals!

"That's twice what the celestials pay! Only an idiot would pass up a deal like that. Before this, celestial money made Demonic Cultivators the profitable target. Now the demons have raised the price, so the celestials are the profitable target instead. It's a trade. The higher bidder gets our blades. Nothing wrong with that!"
