In this standout chapter of the Romance novel The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns, Carmen Henley introduces new challenges, powerful emotions, and major plot progress that captivate readers from beginning to end.

“All of this is for Lottie?”

Nora looked at the mountain of wedding gifts, each one easily worth millions. She forced herself to smile, even though her chest felt tight. “You’re not saving anything for your three sons?” She’d heard Donald, Roger, and Kenneth were still single.

“They don’t need it. They’ve got plenty of money already.” Samantha started piling everything back into the box and set it beside Nora’s pillow. She put on a mock-serious face. “Honestly, I’m not even sure those boys will ever get married. But Lottie? She’s still in school. She doesn’t have any income.” Samantha let out a sigh. “She deserves to be spoiled a little, right?”

Nora couldn’t help but smile. For a second, she wasn’t sure if she should be touched or maybe feel a little bad for her nephews.

“You should keep these for now.” She nudged the box back toward Samantha, her lips pressed together. Her voice dropped to a gentle tone. “Didn’t we promise to be each other’s kids’ godmothers? My daughter is your daughter. We’ll prepare her wedding gift together.”

Nora’s brows drew together as she pushed down her sadness. She meant every word. “I’m counting on you to look after her in the future.”

Lottie might be amazing, but at the end of the day, she was still just nineteen. She needed someone to care for her, to love her. Nora could only hope to repay all her debts in another life.

“Don’t worry. While I’m here, I won’t let her go through anything alone.” Samantha’s reply was solid, no hesitation at all.

She’d always wanted a daughter. Life just gave her three sons instead. In her heart, Lottie was as good as her own.

Still, something about Nora’s tone felt off. Was she… asking Samantha to look after Lottie, like she was making arrangements for after she was gone? No, Samantha told herself, she was just overthinking things.

Wanting Nora to get some rest, and feeling lighter after a good cry, Samantha hugged the box and slipped out.

Nora watched her friend leave, the corners of her mouth lifting into a small smile. Thank goodness Samantha had married Kevin. If she’d ended up with anyone else, it would’ve been a real loss for the Gates family.
