She searched the apartment, but Anthony was nowhere to be found.
Charlotte frowned, opened a drawer, and grabbed the hair dryer. Without hesitating, she headed for the study. The door was half open. Standing in the doorway, she could see him right away, his back to her, robe loosely tied, a few bottles of liquor lined up beside him on the desk.
Pressing her lips together, Charlotte pushed the door open and walked straight to him. The hair dryer clattered against the table, finally snapping Anthony out of his daze. The second he saw her, the gloom on his face disappeared.
“Come here. Let me dry your hair,” he said.
He pulled her into his lap, turned on the hair dryer, and began gently running his fingers through her long, wavy black hair.
Charlotte settled quietly in his arms, arms looped around his neck, holding him close.
“Bad mood?” she asked softly as the hair dryer clicked off, her voice echoing in the quiet room.
Anthony glanced at her with a crooked smile. “A little.”
“Because of the antidote?” Charlotte reached up and stroked his cheek.
He let out a low hum and pressed his forehead to her collarbone, smiling helplessly. “If the one who needed the antidote wasn’t your mom, I could be selfish. I could ignore her and just give it to you.”
If that were the case, she could stay with him, safe and healthy, and they could grow old together.
“But there’s no ‘if,’ is there?” Charlotte gently lifted his chin, leaned down, and kissed him softly. “Anthony, you look so pitiful right now. Let me kiss you. Does that help at all?”
He gave a quiet laugh, caught her hand, and kissed her fingertips. “One more.”
Charlotte smiled and cupped his face, deepening the kiss. She didn’t usually take the lead like this.
