“Morton?”
Charlotte heard the clear, sweet voice on the other end of the line. She pushed off her blanket and sat up in bed, brushing her messy hair behind her ear as she answered quietly.
“Charlotte!”
The excitement in Morton’s voice was obvious. “Charlotte, it’s me, Morton!”
She had left her phone number before she left, but it had been over a year, and Hamlin, Zoe, and their family hadn’t reached out to her once.
“Charlotte, my mom and dad brought me to the city.”
“You’re in Cabinda?” Charlotte frowned. She got out of bed, phone still in hand, and her voice was gentle. “Send me your address. I’ll come to you.”
“Okay, Charlotte.”
Morton’s answer was soft and well-behaved.
After hanging up, Charlotte got herself ready for the day. She stepped out of the bathroom just as Anthony, still in his loungewear, came around the corner. He spotted her standing by the closet, sorting through clothes, and spoke in a low tone. “Heading out?”
“Going to see someone.”
Charlotte had her back to him as she slipped on her underwear, but her arms ached a little and she just couldn’t get the clasp done.
“Do I know them?”
Anthony stepped over, slipped his arms around her waist, and fastened the clasp for her. He handed her a shirt and a sweatshirt too.
“You don’t,” Charlotte replied, straight to the point.
Her circle was tiny, and he pretty much knew everyone in it. That only made Anthony more curious, and his voice dropped a notch. “A guy or a girl?”
“A guy.”
Charlotte grabbed a hat and pulled it on, raising an eyebrow and giving him a playful smile.
A guy?
