Marcia ended the call and turned around, folding her arms as she faced the person in front of her. Her eyes were cold, her voice low. “So? What’s the update?”
“Just like you guessed. Damaris already knows about the bracelet. She’s planning to head to Novaria to find whoever has it,” her assistant replied, respectful as always.
Marcia let out a short, icy laugh. “The Hawk family loses their value and suddenly everyone wants to pretend they never knew them.” Her gaze grew sharper, a bitter smile tugging at her lips. “Not surprising, coming from Damaris. Anyone who can hurt her own son isn’t exactly known for loyalty.”
She remembered how Damaris only cared about the Hawk family for their research lab and influence. Now that the lab was finished, a woman this obsessed with genetic mutations would definitely look for another way. If Damaris got that bracelet before her, Marcia’s dream of marrying Mr. Churchill might be over for good.
Her phone rang again, cutting through her thoughts.
As soon as the call ended, her assistant’s face changed. He looked panicked as he turned to Marcia. “Marcia, word about the bracelet being in Novaria is spreading fast.”
Marcia’s brows knitted together. “What?”
“DM has already shut down all of Novaria. Our people haven’t even made it inside,” he added, voice tense.
Marcia stood frozen, her whole body cold. Her mind raced with worry. She’d sent Olivia to Novaria on purpose, hoping to keep things quiet and avoid Charlotte’s attention. Now, everything was spinning out of her control. Novaria was locked down. Olivia was trapped inside, and their own people couldn’t get in. The whole plan had backfired.
“Useless, Olivia.” Marcia pressed her palms against the desk, her face set in a hard, frosty glare. If Olivia hadn’t tried to play both sides, wanting money and trying to mess with Charlotte, none of this mess would have happened. Even if she’d just acted a day sooner, things wouldn’t be this bad.
“Marcia, what should we do now?” her assistant asked quietly.
Novaria wasn’t like Isle of Veil or Solenia. DM ran everything there, totally in control. And the person behind DM was a mystery, never showing his face. If Novaria was suddenly locked down, it had to be because of the antidote. What was he planning to do with it?
“Try to get in touch with the head of DM,” Marcia said after a moment. She knew it was the only way forward. “Whatever he wants, money or anything else, as long as he names a price, do what you can to meet it.”
