Charlotte shot Dr. David a sideways look, brow slightly furrowed. “Do I really seem that scary to you?”

Dr. David didn’t answer, but his eyes looked a little wounded.

“As long as you don’t make me pay for anything, we’re good,” he finally said, relaxing a bit once he realized this wasn’t about the lab work.

“Don’t get too comfortable,” Charlotte said, tugging her jacket a little closer and zipping it up. A slight smile curled at her lips. “Who said we’re friends? Right now, it’s plaintiff versus defendant.”

Dr. David just stared at her. When it came to money, she was always dead serious.

“Alright, enough already.”

Looking at the bags under his eyes and the obvious exhaustion from another sleepless night, Charlotte’s expression softened. Her voice dropped. “Take care of yourself, okay?”

Dr. David blinked, surprised. Was she actually worried about him? Did that mean he was off the hook for the money?

He barely had time to enjoy the thought before Charlotte’s voice interrupted, calm but direct. “You can work off what you owe me.”

Any trace of a smile vanished from Dr. David’s face.

“Let’s talk inside.”

Charlotte arched an eyebrow, absentmindedly touched her stomach, and headed in. Dr. David quickly followed, still trying to figure out what was going on. They’d just gotten engaged yesterday. If she was here alone this early, she was definitely keeping it from Anthony.

“I heard there’s news about the bracelet,” Dr. David said quietly, pouring her a glass of iced orange juice.
