“Mmm.” Anthony answered quietly, his voice low as he ended the call. His face was tight with worry.

“What’s going on?” Charlotte asked.

“Marcia’s trying to get in touch with Newell, wants to team up with him to track down Olivia,” Anthony said, his tone rough. “And… he’s sick.”

Sick?

Charlotte’s eyes sharpened at that, but she didn’t ask anything else. She just grabbed her phone and dialed Newell’s number without a second thought.

The phone rang for what felt like forever.

Finally, Newell picked up, sounding tired and raspy, but there was a trace of a smile in his voice. “Calling me this early? Afraid I’d sleep in and miss something?”

Hearing him crack a joke, Charlotte felt some of her tension fade. “I heard you were sick. Just checking in.”

“You being worried about me… that’s a little scary, you know?” Newell said, holding the phone a little tighter. A faint smile appeared on his pale face.

No matter what happened, he still mattered to her. At least a little.

Charlotte didn’t know what to say.

Had Newell gotten used to her pushing him around?

He gave a weak cough, then said quietly, “Olivia’s got plenty of fake IDs. She knows we’re looking for her and she’s staying hidden on purpose. It’ll take some time to find her.”

“We’ll be in Novaria in the next couple days. Just focus on getting better,” Charlotte said.

She could hear how sick he was, just from his voice.

Everyone already knew about Olivia and the bracelet… people were watching from all sides, ready to pounce. They weren’t the only ones hunting her.
