When Allanson spoke her name, the butler paused, looking lost for a second.

Was this about the genetics research institute? He’d spent half his life building it, and now Charlotte had destroyed everything. There was no way Allanson would just let that go.

“She’s returned to Cabinda,” the butler said quietly. After a moment’s hesitation, he added, “She and Anthony had their engagement ceremony yesterday.”

“Engaged?” Allanson’s eyes narrowed. A strange little smile tugged at his lips, something between mockery and disbelief. “How old is she anyway? Is Franco really that desperate to marry her off?”

He turned toward the window, anger simmering beneath the surface. “Heir to The Blair Group? Leader of the X Organization? That means nothing… He’s still not good enough for her.”

The butler stared at him, completely confused. What was Allanson saying? Was that regret in his voice? It almost sounded like he was upset about losing something precious, something he never meant to let go. Wasn’t he supposed to hate her?

“Bring Marcia here,” Allanson said, his voice low and cold, his eyes growing darker.

“Yes, sir.” The butler glanced at him, searching for a clue to this sudden change, then quietly left the room.

Was Allanson’s attitude toward Charlotte really changing? Or was he just imagining things?

A few minutes later, Marcia hurried in. She stopped short when she saw Allanson lying in bed, pale and exhausted. Her hands curled into tight fists at her sides.

This is bad. Of all times for Grandfather to wake up, why now?

“Grandfather,” she said, forcing herself to sound calm and respectful.
