Donald just stared, lost for words.

Roger didn’t say a thing.

Kenneth stayed silent too.

The second Charlotte called them “uncles,” the three brothers glanced at each other. The icy tension that had been swirling around them slowly faded away.

“Helen, can you bring some honey water?” Anthony’s voice cut through the silence. He was already guiding Charlotte over to the sofa, worry etched across his face as he knelt in front of her. “Is the nausea really bad? Is there anything that helps at all?”

“No.” Charlotte took a couple of sips and glanced over at her brothers. “The babies are making a fuss. I think they want their uncles to chat with them.”

Roger fell quiet. The other two might have been fooled, but as a doctor, he could see right through her. Charlotte didn’t look the slightest bit nauseous. If she wanted to help Anthony out of trouble, she could at least act a little more convincingly.

Kenneth piped up, “How about we finish this fight first and talk later?” He wasn’t about to miss a chance to give Anthony a hard time when he could get away with it.

Donald’s eyes narrowed. “Sounds good to me. Anthony’s got to pay up today.” Maybe he’d go easy, just because Anthony was making him an uncle.

Right on cue, Charlotte made another show of gagging, leaning back on the couch and rubbing her belly. “The babies don’t want to see any fighting,” she said, drawing out her words.

All three brothers froze. Charlotte was clearly playing them for fools. But what could they do? She was their one and only sister. Spoiling her was basically a reflex.

They exchanged another look. Whatever fight they had brewing fizzled out, and they shuffled over to sit by Charlotte instead.

Donald grinned. “With your genes, those kids are going to be little warriors. Just let them train with me when they’re older.”

Roger smirked. “You want to talk genes? Lottie’s a top forensic scientist and doctor. Her kids will probably be brainiacs, not fighters.”

Kenneth started to say something, then stopped. He realized he’d never actually seen Lottie sing or dance. The only thing musical about her was the way she wrote music scores. Those babies probably weren’t destined for stardom.
