Normally, morning sickness wasn’t supposed to be this bad. If she was feeling this awful, it could only mean something was wrong with her genes. At this pace, her body might hold out for another month at best. The antidote was supposed to be ready at the end of the month too. The timing was so tight, it felt like she was running a race against death.
“You two really picked the short straw, didn’t you? Why did you have to choose me as your mom?” Charlotte lowered her eyes, trying to hide the ache in her heart. She forced a wry smile. “My two little dummies.”
No matter what happens, I’ll protect you. I have to. You’re the babies of the man I love with all my heart. I won’t let anything happen to you.

Isle of Veil.
Newell zipped up his suitcase and checked the time. The evening flight to Cabinda was waiting. The latest reports said the antidote would be ready by the end of the month. He’d been laying low for almost two weeks. It was time to go back. But before he left, there was one last problem he had to deal with.
“Mr. Churchill, Damaris is in her room. Do you want to see her now?” his aide asked quietly.
“Yes.”
Newell straightened his black suit and tightened his tie, his eyes cold and unreadable. “Is everything ready?”
“All set.” The aide’s voice shook, barely hiding his nerves. Mr. Churchill’s plan was dangerous. If it failed, the fallout would be catastrophic.
“Let’s go.” Newell’s face didn’t change. He let his hands fall to his sides, pressed his lips together, and took long strides toward the door.
Just as he reached the threshold, a shadow appeared out of nowhere, dropping to its knees in front of him.
It was Cedric.
Last time, Cedric had betrayed him, secretly warning Damaris and almost getting Charlotte killed. Since then, Cedric had been locked up.
Newell didn’t move. He just looked down at Cedric, his voice low and calm. “How long have you been with me?”
