The silence from his subordinate was answer enough.
Damaris knew all about Newell and Nine. Of course she’d try something. At a time like this, Newell couldn’t risk anything going wrong. If he wanted to keep Damaris in line, he’d have to take charge of the whole family.
“Cedric.” The subordinate’s voice was careful, full of respect. “We all know how Newell’s lived. You have to realize, part of why Damaris cares about the antidote is for Newell. And honestly…” He paused, his tone growing heavier. “Newell’s never really known what a family feels like. Nine brought a little bit of warmth into his life.”
Cedric looked up. His eyes shook a little, the words hitting harder than he expected.
“Newell’s feelings for Nine are probably way past anything romantic. It’s more like family.” The subordinate let out a quiet sigh. “When Newell disappeared on purpose, it was Nine who looked for him. So whatever he does for her, I don’t think it’s too much.”
He dipped his head and gently patted Cedric’s shoulder. “Testing the antidote could kill him. But if he doesn’t try it, he’s got no chance. In the end, Nine’s the only one who can save him.”
With that, the subordinate stood there for a moment, then bowed to Cedric and left without another glance. Whatever Newell needed today, he’d put everything on the line.
Cedric watched him go, the words echoing in his mind. His expression grew dim. He’d wondered more than once—if Newell hadn’t gone soft, if he’d just brought Nine back to the Isle of Veil for those experiments, maybe Newell would’ve been cured by now.
But he’d never really stopped to think about what Nine meant to Newell in a life that had always been so dark.
After a long silence, Cedric gave a bitter shake of his head. He looked up at the guard standing nearby and spoke quietly. “Tell Newell I’m sorry. If he ever needs me, just let me know. I’ll be there.”
Then, dragging his feet, Cedric walked away from Newell, his figure slowly fading down the hall.
