Now there was something new to worry about.

“She’s been having trouble sleeping lately. Do you think it has anything to do with this mutated gene?”

Anthony sat close to Charlotte, his arm resting behind her on the chair. His eyes looked clouded, and his face was tense.

“We can’t say for sure,” Dr. David said.

“The report came in while you two were in Solenia. I’ve been going over it since then, but I haven’t found anything out of the ordinary.”

Anthony frowned. “What does that mean?”

“It means we don’t know yet if this new gene mutation will coexist with my body, like the first one did,” Charlotte explained as she closed the folder. She leaned back, looking relaxed.

She glanced at the milk tea on the table, then looked at Anthony.

He got the hint right away, picked it up, and held the straw to her lips.

Charlotte took a couple of sips, calm as ever. “It’s not surprising that nothing’s turned up yet. So far, aside from the insomnia, I feel completely fine.”

She was a doctor. Nobody knew her own body better than she did.

“As for the insomnia...” Charlotte rested her pale arm on the table, tapping her fingers, sounding almost bored. “I’ll write a new prescription tonight. You guys can work on a new medication. It shouldn’t be a problem.”

She paused and gave Anthony a reassuring smile, just in case he was still worried. “If you’re still uneasy, keep digging. Keep running tests.”

“But Anthony, you know you’re paying for all this, right?” she teased.

He squeezed her hand, his expression serious. “Money doesn’t matter. I just want to make sure these two genes don’t put you at risk.”

Dr. David nodded in agreement.

Charlotte’s genetics were unique, nothing like anyone else’s, which made researching her so much harder.

Take the Hg21 gene, for example. You could search the entire world and probably never find another person with it.

Suddenly, Dr. David seemed to remember something. He paused, lost in thought.
