I heard Ashley's sharp voice through the earpiece.

"Are you the new neighbor? Did you buy this place? Or are you just renting?" she asked.

Louis responded, "Rent? I just made a lot of money. Why would I rent? Only poor people rent. I'm not poor now."

I wasn't sure if it was Louis's ragged clothes or what he said, but it caught Ashley's attention.

Ashley excitedly started chatting with Louis. Their conversation sounded very familiar.

It was exactly what she had said to my wife and me three years ago.

They came from Perry Village. They were always bullied because they were honest people.

After her in-laws died, her brother-in-law took their land and kicked them out.

If the government hadn't taken pity on them and given them a house because of their disabled son, they would have frozen on the streets.

Hearing this, I couldn't help but sigh again.

Back then, because of what she said, I even considered getting them a lawyer to help reclaim their land.

I bet when I said that, they laughed at how gullible I was.

Recently, I had someone investigate Gavin's family.

I used to think their stories were half-true. After Victor came to me, I realized they were all lies.

Louis grinned and asked them, "What do you think is the fastest way to make money in this world?"

"Gambling?" they all answered in unison.

"Exactly. That's how we make our money," he said.

They instantly lost interest.

I was puzzled. Didn't they find this kind of easy money-making method attractive?

Could I have been wrong?

The next morning, Victor knocked on Louis's door.
