Zoey let out a bitter laugh, breaking the tense silence.

Her laughter echoed eerily in the morgue, drawing everyone’s attention.

She wiped her tears away forcefully and pulled out a document from her coat,

throwing it in Jackson’s face.

My heart clenched. Zoey hated confrontation, but she had fought for me time and

again.

I’m the one who dragged her into this mess.

Zoey gently pulled the white sheet over my body, staring out the window at the

sycamore trees, speaking to herself.

“Jenna didn’t have a good start in life. Her family was a bunch of parasites who

valued sons over daughters. Maybe you forgot, but when they tried to force her into

marriage, you saved her, and she said she’d repay you.”

“When your family went through tough times, she said she couldn’t stand to see you

suffer. She starved herself and drank cold water just to pay your tuition and buy you

sneakers.”

“The day you took her to change her name, she cried all night, leaning on me, saying

she’d never be able to repay you in this lifetime.”

“That’s why she kept giving all the money she earned to Rachel, hoping it would

make you happy when she came back.”

“But submitting to everything doesn’t lead to love…”
