He figured Kennedy must have run into someone he knew, so he didn’t step in. Darin walked over, ready to help, but Kennedy blocked his way. “Darin, just leave her. She had it coming.”
Darin ignored him and helped the woman up anyway. “Are you okay?” he asked.
Felicia was in so much pain she couldn’t get a word out. She didn’t even look at him. Instead, she shook her head and hobbled over to pick up her fallen thermos.
Darin shot Kennedy a look. “Didn’t you notice she’s pregnant? This is Max’s company. What if something happened to her?”
Kennedy glanced at Felicia’s sturdy figure and let out a cold laugh. “She looks fine to me. And if something did happen, maybe it would be better if she lost the baby.”
Felicia froze where she stood. Her chest tightened, the words cutting right through her. If Kennedy could say something like that, it could only mean one thing. Max didn’t want this child at all.
Darin frowned, but before he could say anything, a clear, cheerful voice rang out. “Hey, Darin!”
Darin snapped out of his thoughts and looked up. Andrea was running toward him, her beret perched on her head, a soft wool sweater paired with a pleated skirt. White boots hugged her slim legs. She looked so young, so full of life, and absolutely beautiful. Behind her, a handsome man followed, Andrea’s coat draped over his arm, his gaze full of affection.
“No running. It’s dangerous.” Darin scolded gently.
Andrea slipped her arm through his and pouted. “I’m not a kid. I’m not going to fall that easily.”
Kennedy stepped over with a teasing grin. “If Andrea ever took a tumble, I bet Max would tear the whole building down just to make it right.”
Andrea’s cheeks turned rosy. She shot Kennedy a look. “Kennedy, what are you talking about?”
Max walked up. “Let’s get lunch.”
Kennedy and Darin had been waiting here for Max and Andrea. Andrea let go of Darin and reached out to hold the hand of the man beside her. The group made their way to the exit, passing Felicia, who was struggling to squat down and lift her thermos.
Max watched him quietly. They’d met years ago while studying overseas, started a private equity firm together, and had always been close. Max knew about Darin’s little sister. Darin carried her photo with him everywhere, proof of how much he missed her.
Years back, Darin’s mother had remarried into the Curtis family in Northwick, taking him along. The Curtis family was a big deal there. Darin had taken his mother’s last name, and Mr. Curtis had raised him as his own, eventually making him CEO of IronGate Industries.
“Now that you’re here in the Capital, you’re really not going to find her?”
Darin shook his head. “What’s the point? Seeing her would only make things harder. She probably doesn’t even remember me.”
She’d only been nine when he left with their mother. So many years had passed. He was probably just a blurry memory to Felicia now. Even if they met, they’d only be strangers who happened to share a past. There was no point.
“Don’t you want to know what she looks like now?”
Darin’s eyes drifted across the field to where Andrea stood, like he was picturing someone else through her. He gave a faint, wistful smile. “She’s probably a lot like Andrea. I just wonder which lucky guy will end up with her someday.”
