Felicia looked over at Max.
Tatiana turned around, glanced at her son, then shot Felicia a pointed warning. “You’d better keep my words in mind, Evelynn. Don’t do something you’ll regret.”
She headed off toward the bathroom.
When Tatiana left, only Felicia and Max were left in the corridor.
Felicia gave him a cold look. She really didn’t feel like talking to him at all. “Something came up. I have to go. Please let Anne know for me, Mr. Hawthorne.”
As Felicia started to leave, she heard his voice behind her. “You can tell Anne yourself.”
Felicia stopped. She went back into the room. Anne’s happy little face fell. “But you hardly ate anything.”
“I’m sorry, Anne. I really have to go,” Felicia said gently.
Anne’s eyes were full of hope. “Then next time, can you come have dinner at our house?”
Felicia smiled and nodded. “Of course.”
Anne’s face immediately brightened again. “Then I’ll walk you out.”
“That’s okay, sweetie. I can go on my own. You finish your dinner, and we’ll talk soon, alright?”
After making sure Anne was alright, Felicia stepped out of the room. She glanced at Max, walked right past him, and had barely made it out when she heard Anne calling, “Daddy, can you walk Evelynn out?”
Felicia could feel Max’s gaze on her back. She stopped and turned to look at him, her voice calm. “That’s not necessary, Mr. Hawthorne.”
He didn’t respond. His handsome face was set and unreadable as he started walking ahead.
He stopped right in front of her, looking down with those sharp, dark eyes. Suddenly he let out a short chuckle.
Felicia found herself backed up against the wall, still glaring up at him.
“You’ve got quite the attitude, Evelynn.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
He smirked. “You really do like to make yourself look good. That wasn’t a compliment.”
Felicia clenched her fists, her heart pounding so hard it hurt. She really wanted to slap him. She took a slow breath, forcing herself to stay calm, and snapped, “Save your breath. I don’t care what you think of me.”
She slipped around him and walked away, not bothering to waste another word on him.
