He just stood there, watching her stomp off, a cold, unreadable smile on his lips.

Felicia didn’t feel her anger start to fade until she was well past the front gate. In her head, she’d already cursed that jerk a thousand times. Finally, after a while, she managed to calm herself down and flagged down a taxi to head home.

The cab took her past the street near her old high school, the one lined with all those little food stalls. Her stomach rumbled. She hadn’t even eaten a proper dinner. On impulse, she told the driver to stop.

It had been ages since she’d walked down this street. She wondered if her favorite pho shop was still there. She followed the familiar sidewalk and, to her relief, the shop lights were still on. She went in and ordered a bowl of their spicy beef pho, just like she used to.

Her phone rang as she was waiting. She dug it out of her bag and saw Luke’s name on the screen.

“What are you up to? Didn’t you see my messages?” he asked.

“I didn’t, sorry. Let me check,” Felicia said.

She set her phone down, opened her messages, and saw he’d sent her a photo of a huge, fancy dinner, with a caption asking what she was eating tonight.

Luke had gone home for dinner, which meant he’d skipped Savannah’s get-together. Lately he’d been showing up at her place so often that he barely ate at his own. But tonight his mom, Rose, had insisted he come home.

Right then her pho arrived. She took a quick photo and sent it to him.

Luke replied in seconds. “No way. You went without me?”

Felicia laughed. “Didn’t you just have a feast? Isn’t that enough?”

“Nothing beats the pho you are having,” he said. “I’m coming over. Order me a big one. I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

Before she could even reply, he’d hung up.

He didn’t push for details. They started chatting about random things while he finished his food. The shop was full of students, and the two of them definitely got their share of looks.

When Luke reached for his phone to pay, Felicia waved him off. “Already covered.”

He put his phone away, easy as ever. “Alright. Next time, it’s on me.”

They walked out together, and Felicia’s phone buzzed again. This time it was Jeremy. She suddenly remembered she’d promised he could pick her up, mostly because she didn’t want to ride with Tatiana’s driver. Oops.

“Sorry. I already left. I forgot to tell you,” she said.

“No worries. Are you home?”

“Not yet. I’m still out with Luke.”
