Colt was making his way over, chatting with Darin as they went. The moment Colt spotted Felicia, he called out, “Evelynn.”

Felicia stepped forward, her smile polite and warm. “Mr. Foxhall, Colt.”

Darin gave her a small nod, acknowledging her greeting.

Colt looked genuinely surprised. “Wait, you know Mr. Foxhall?” He was just about to introduce them.

Felicia’s eyes stayed calm, her expression unreadable. “We've met before,” she said simply.

“Oh, got it.”

Darin glanced at her. “I didn’t expect to run into you here, Evelynn. Do you have a minute to talk?”

Felicia met his gaze, her lips curving into a gentle smile, though her eyes stayed cool. She didn’t say no. “Sure.”

Darin told Colt goodbye, then led Felicia to a quiet spot in the lounge area on the first floor. They sat across from each other, the low hum of conversation filling the background.

“Are you here to chew me out, Mr. Foxhall?” Felicia asked, her tone light but with a bite. After all, even though he’d done everything to make things right, she had still slapped Andrea. It was just one slap, but Max and Darin acted like they needed to shield Andrea from the world.

Darin caught the edge in her voice. He just watched her, his voice steady. “That’s not why I’m here.”

“Then what do you want to talk about?” Felicia asked.

Darin went quiet. Honestly, he wasn’t sure himself. He looked at her, and even knowing she hit Andrea, he couldn't find it in himself to be angry.

Felicia started to frown as Darin just stared at her, lost in thought. The silence stretched.

“If you don’t have anything to say, I’ll be going,” Felicia said after a moment, already gathering her things.

She didn’t slow down until she made it back to her office. Only then did she let herself breathe, though the uneasy feeling wouldn’t quite let go. She didn’t even know what she was so afraid of. She hadn’t done anything wrong.

Downstairs, Darin stayed seated on the sofa, unmoving, his eyes lowered as he got lost in his thoughts. He didn’t stir until his phone rang, snapping him out of it.

It was Max, calling about their meeting that afternoon. “I’ll be there in half an hour,” Darin said, getting to his feet.

He’d barely climbed into his car when his phone rang again. This time it was Andrea.

“Andrea, what’s up?” he asked.

Andrea immediately began venting. She was at the Hawthorne family’s summer estate. She didn’t really like Anne, but she knew Max adored his daughter. He hadn’t even remarried, all because of Anne. If Andrea wanted a future with Max, she had to win Anne over first.

But ever since Evelynn showed up, Anne had only gotten more distant toward her. Tatiana had invited Andrea, hoping it would be a chance for her and Anne to get along, but things weren’t working out. Anne wouldn’t touch the pastries Andrea made just for her, refused to go anywhere with her, and while she was all politeness when adults were around, the moment they were alone, Anne just ignored her completely.
