For someone so young, she really knew how to put on a show. It just went to one thing right—a child who isn’t your own never really appreciates you, no matter how much you do for her. She’s just an ungrateful little brat. Andrea was at her breaking point, tears filling her voice as she poured her heart out to Darin.

Darin listened patiently to his sister’s complaints. “Why don’t you just come home for a bit, Andrea? Give yourself some time to cool off and figure out how you want to deal with Anne.”

Andrea sniffled. “I’ve treated her so well her whole life. And she’s only just met Evelynn and now she’s obsessed with her. I don’t know what Evelynn did to her, but it’s like Anne’s under some kind of spell.” Her voice trembled, caught between anger and hurt.

Darin just let her vent, then spoke gently. “Come home, okay? We’ll talk it out when you’re here.”

It took a while, but Andrea finally calmed down. When she hung up, Darin set his phone aside and headed out.

About forty minutes later, Darin arrived at BlueMarble Investments. In the president’s office, Max was on a video call with Anne, trying to coax her into taking her afternoon nap. Darin walked in, sat down on the couch, and grabbed a book from the coffee table, flipping through the pages as he waited quietly.

On the screen, Anne’s voice was soft. “Daddy, is Evelynn back in the Capital yet? I want to go see her.”

She’d had a great time playing with Mandy these past few days, but she still wished Evelynn were there too.

Max glanced at her, his tone gentle. “It’s really hot in the Capital right now. I have work to do there soon, but for now, you should just have fun with Mandy and everyone, okay?”

It was the hottest time of the year in the Capital and Anne usually spent it at the summer house.

Anne pouted. “But I’m not sick anymore. Can I call Evelynn now?”

Her dad had told her not to call Evelynn when she was sick because Evelynn would just worry. Anne didn’t want to make her worry, so she hadn’t called.

Max smiled. “Let me check if she is busy first. If she’s free, I’ll call you back.”

“Alright,” Anne said quietly, her little face falling.

“It’s time for your nap now.”

Max grinned. “What can I say? She’s my kid. Of course I spoil her. You should think about having a kid too, you know. Don’t wait too long or it’ll get harder.”

Darin rolled his eyes and laughed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Max stubbed out his cigarette, raising an eyebrow with a smirk. “It means I’m just looking out for you.”

“Yeah, right.”

Darin wasn’t about to keep talking about this. Now he knew exactly how it felt when Max started bragging about being a dad.

The two of them shifted gears and got down to business.

“So, how’s everything going in Northwick?” Max asked.
