“I guess so.”
Wyatt could tell Max didn’t want to talk about it, so he let it go.
The kids were getting hungry.
Felicia and Amber took Anne and Mandy inside to the lounge, where the staff had already set out some pastries and tea. Anne picked up a piece of cake and held it out to Felicia. Felicia took a small bite, then ran her hand gently over Anne’s soft hair. Looking at Anne’s rosy, happy face, her voice turned gentle. “Thank you.”
Amber watched the two of them from across the table and smiled. “Anne and Evelynn are so close.”
Felicia returned the smile. “I really like kids.”
From their short conversation, Felicia could tell Amber came from a cultured family. She had a natural poise, the kind that told you right away she’d grown up with good manners and a strong sense of boundaries. They didn’t pry or ask nosy questions. Felicia actually found it easy to talk to her.
A little while later, Max and Wyatt walked in. They saw Felicia and Amber chatting, the mood light and comfortable.
“What’s got you two in such a good mood?” Wyatt asked as he came over.
Felicia and Amber both looked up. The moment Felicia saw Max, her eyes cooled just a little.
Max looked right back at her.
Wyatt sat down next to Amber and Mandy, slipping his arm around his wife and asking their daughter if she’d had fun today. The whole scene just radiated warmth and happiness.
Max started to sit next to Felicia. She immediately shifted over, making room. “Anne, come sit here,” she said, patting the seat between them.
Anne, completely unaware of what her mom was doing, happily squeezed in between them.
Max glanced at Felicia, noticing how she’d put distance between them, then turned to Anne. “Don’t eat too many sweets,” he reminded her.
Anne handed him the rest of her cake. “Then you eat it, Daddy.”
Felicia smiled. “I’d love to.”
Anne and Mandy waved goodbye as they climbed into their cars.
Wyatt drove, with Amber sitting up front, quiet for a moment before finally saying what was on her mind. “All day, I just kept feeling like Evelynn is Anne’s mom. Do you think she’s really Felicia?”
Amber had never met Felicia before, but she’d heard the stories. The Hawthornes never liked her. Max hadn’t wanted her either. In Amber’s mind, a girl who’d married into the family like that would have clung to her position no matter what, even if it meant putting up with a lot.
But Felicia had surprised her. She’d given birth to the Hawthornes’ only daughter, a child who could have guaranteed her place in the family. And then she’d disappeared. Amber couldn’t help but respect her for that.
Wyatt just laughed quietly. “I think you might be right.”
Amber’s eyes widened. “Seriously… Does Max know?”
