A scream cut through the ballroom, sharp and sudden, making everyone freeze.
Max’s face turned ice cold, his presence almost suffocating. Felicia had Andrea by the hair, dragging her across the floor. Andrea flailed, but she was no match for Felicia, whose strength came from years of training. The guests stared, wide-eyed and silent, no one brave enough to interfere.
“Let go of me, you psycho! Max! Max!” Andrea shrieked, her voice echoing off the marble.
Jeremy stepped in, blocking Max before he could move. He met Max’s deadly stare and spoke quietly, “Mr. Hawthorne, this is between them. Let them handle it.”
Max glared, his eyes black and cold enough to chill the whole room. For a moment, it felt like the air itself was too thick to breathe.
“Jeremy,” Max said, his voice low and mocking, “do you really think you can take me on?”
Jeremy didn’t back down. “I guess we’ll find out.”
Andrea’s cries grew louder. Felicia hauled her over to the drink table, grabbed a bottle, and dumped wine all over her, soaking her dress and hair.
Max moved to intervene, but Jeremy wouldn’t let him pass. Max’s fists were clenched so tight his knuckles stood out white.
The tension was about to snap when the event coordinators rushed over, desperate to calm things down. Jim, who only just realized his niece was involved, hurried over, shocked by the chaos. He tried to stop Felicia, and security quickly stepped in to separate the women.
Felicia was shaking with anger, her eyes red, breathing hard as she glared at Andrea, who was drenched and miserable.
Jim helped Andrea up, looking at Felicia with a deep frown, but whatever he wanted to say stayed stuck in his throat.
Max crossed the room, still radiating danger. Andrea clung to him, sobbing, whispering “Max, Max” like a broken record.
Jim looked at Max, startled by how furious he seemed.
Max pulled Andrea into his arms and stared down Felicia, his gaze so cold it felt like winter. Felicia didn’t back away, her hands balled into fists at her sides.
“What a waste of a sixty-thousand-dollar dress,” she said, forcing a laugh.
Jeremy shrugged, “Call it a work hazard. The company will cover it.”
Felicia looked up, a real smile breaking through. “Best boss ever,” she teased.
Jeremy grinned back.
She hesitated, then asked, “Do you regret bringing me tonight?”
She knew Max had never looked so furious before.
Jeremy sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes warm behind his glasses. “Regret? That’s not in my vocabulary. Besides, if I don’t have your back, I’m not much of a good boss, am I?”
